Writing a Psychology Essay: A Guide

Before anything else, you need to make sure you know what your teacher wants. Look at the instructions: does your teacher have a certain topic you have to use, or are you free to use your own? Check what style, if any, your teacher wants you to use, and certain formatting guidelines.

  1. Make an outline.
  2. The way you do this is taking the bare bones of the essay structure and writing down the order you want each element to appear. Start with your introduction, body, conclusion, and fill in the blanks with a short summary of what you want to write in each section.
  3. Do all your research next.
  4. If you haven’t been given or chosen a topic yet, then now is the time to do that. Do some reading about psychology concepts that interest you and figure out if there are enough sources to back up the topic you want to do
  5. Write the first draft.
  6. Using your outline and research, it should be easy to fill things in further and expand on the ideas that you already have written down. Take some time here to really brainstorm and flesh out everything related to your main topic. Having subtopics and relative research really makes your essay shine.
  7. For the editing process:
  8. start with the big things such as sources that might not fit, or paragraphs that need rewriting. The issues that you know are there but don’t want to tackle – do those first. Then, you can get onto tweaking word choices and making sure your sentences flow better. If you leave the big issues till last, you’ll have to redo all your word tweaking and sentence flowing.

  • Thank you so much for helping me write my IB extended essay. I am a foreign student and had a problem writing such a big and complex paper on my own. I was even planning to pay a professional writing service to have it written but my budget was too small. I will definitely recommend your blog to all of my friends.
